MUDs, what are the real problem's that they could have? Someone gets to pretend to be someone they are not, and if they get satisfaction out of it, who am I to argue. Although some of the negative aspects may out weight the positives. In my blogs I refer to myself as Princess Peach, but the difference between me, and someone who might be deeply engrossed in the MUD personality, is that I do not believe that I am her.
People use the Sims and other simulation programs to create a life that they could never have. The movie Avatar would be an example of living out a lifestyle that is not yours, but you are acting it out. Just like in the movie it can get taken to far, and the lines between reality and fantasy become blurred.
The users real identity can only be determined by the user. Some may be creating a personality to live out their desire that they could never maintain in their actuality. While others use their digital identities to 'release steam', and create something so rediculous that they know it could never live up to their physical being.
But the real question, is it wrong to live through your MUD character? Does this create a breeding ground for anti-social kids to grow and never live in the actual world and experience their life?
Think it over buckos.
